Green Gov, Like Axion International (AXIH), Leads Sustainability Movement by Example

Axion is not the only organization that thinks and functions outside of the proverbial box. The “Green Gov” movement, as described in a blog post from a website called Target Population, is an interesting concept, as it shows the government’s commitment to sustainable construction. The principles fit nicely with Axion’s history in using products that are made of 100% recycled products. Axion is strategically positioned to benefit if Green Gov becomes a standard for the private industry, as their priorities are parallel. Target Population’s blog post cites, “Federal agencies are already taking actions toward sustainability and by doing so they are helping to spur innovation and jobs in the private sector, reducing costs, and reducing pollution and the use of precious resources.” Axion has the foresight to already follow these tactics independently, demonstrating that we are clearly a leader in sustainability. Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, blogged discussing her meeting with the Office of Management and Budget and other leaders from federal agencies regarding sustainability in the federal government. She reported this meeting was a follow up to Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech on January 27, 2010 in which he “set a government-wide greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 28 percent by 2020….” Under the executive order each federal agency is required to create its own sustainability plan. The 28% reduction plan resulted from reviewing the plans from 35 different federal agency targets. For example the Department of Defense plans to “reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2020 for all non-combat activities,” and the Department of the Treasury “intends to reduce its emissions by 33%,” by 2020. Government leaders also seek to engage the approximately 1.5 million federal employees in the plan toward sustainability. They sponsored the Green Gov contest last October, an online program that challenged employees to take part in the President’s Executive Order on Federal Sustainability by submitting their own clean energy ideas and voting on others. Over 1,380 ideas were submitted to eliminate waste and save energy, and many will be put into practice in the very near foreseeable future. The emissions reduction plan was a requirement in the executive order on Federal Sustainability, which committed the federal government to lead by example. Axion technology pioneers the use of recycled materials in a variety of industrial applications. We believe that these solutions are both economically competitive and eco-friendly in addition to being structurally superior in many important ways. We believe that a strong government mandate can only help accelerate our growth and bring more attention to our world class technologies.

What if a Manufacturer Led the Way in Recycling Plastic?

It’s easy to buy into the “I’m just one person so I can’t make a difference” mentality. If I’m not going to make a difference one way or the other, the thinking goes, why does it matter whether I throw my used plastic cup away at, say, a party? It’s just one cup, right?

That’s exactly the wrong attitude if we want to work towards the smart allocation of resources. A blog post from a website called Regaining Freedom asserts, “Plastic cups are a ubiquitous form of rubbish. They represent something that is manufactured, that consumes raw materials, is used once and then becomes landfill or is burnt.“ This product is truly the definition of waste material. We as a whole use a plastic cup once, then discard it without giving it a second thought. Think of every party you’ve ever gone to. Think of all of the mass quantities of once-used, then discarded cups that are strewn all over the premises at the end of a party, only to be collected and thrown away when the cleaning process ensues.

“We all know that recycling is good for the environment (reduce, reuse, recycle),” asserts Regaining Freedom. If we have adopted and accepted this mantra, and have dutifully taken on the responsibility to recycle paper and cans, why can’t this truth carry over to plastics? It can, it just has not been established as common knowledge, which makes what Axion International is doing with much larger scale plastic products such a novel idea.

If plastic is seen as something that is used once and then becomes landfill, we think it’s remarkable that Axion, utilizing proprietary technology developed by Rutgers University, has created a next-generation technology that is utilizing recycled plastic to create environmentally friendly composite containers that are made from nearly 100% recyclable materials. Rather than acting as a typical manufacturing or building materials company, Axion uses 100% recycled materials for production, significantly reducing the environmental footprint that the manufacturing industry has traditionally placed on the environment.

But creating large-scale products with recycled plastic is certainly not the only means of re-using plastic goods. We can start by using that plastic cup from the party as a planter for your windowsill or backyard. There are countless uses for plastics, and their durability allows us to use them over and over again.

Thanks to our thermoplastic technology, the versatility of plastic has just gotten deeper. So far we’ve built bridges and rail road ties, but there are many other possibilities. Beyond expanding our own understanding of their unique challenges, it was a great opportunity for us to show them first hand the cost efficiencies, environmental sustainability and long term durability of our patented thermoplastics.
